WRITING

This is the office on top of Delphi. I built this office specifically for the writing of my book.

Chapter 3 from Call of the Mountain

“Each entered the forest at a point where he himself had chosen, where it was darkest and there was no path.”
Joseph Campbell

The sound of the truck faded over the distant hills. My friend had just dropped me and my tools off in the woods. It was early May. The forest lay silent. I was hungover and alone

Before me on the forest floor, lay a large pile of camping equipment, food and tools. I loaded a fraction of the bare essentials into my pack and slung it onto my back. I tightened up the shoulder straps and looked back at the hills that rose between me and the world that I was leaving behind. I had prepared for months to get to this point and now that I was here I felt empty and unsure. The fantasy I had created in my mind about life in the forest had been fantastically beautiful. My foggy mind, the heavy pack and pathless forest before me was a crushing contrast to my imagined utopia.

I turned north, took a deep breath and stepped into the solemn forest.
